June 18th: The Day Sir Macca was Born

Sir Paul
Today is Sir Paul McCartney's 70th Birthday! Made famous by the superstar four-piece The Beatles, McCartney has managed to establish an independent music career, using the 60s Beatle-mania as a platform to further success. He was born June 18th 1942 in Liverpool, England, as James Paul McCartney and since then has become known as Paul, Macca, and the lead singer of Wings. Receiving a doctorate in Music from the University of Sussex proves McCartney's talent, and his fame in the industry is more than enough evidence of his expertise.
Some stuff you might not know about Macca...

  • He's a leftie. (Left-handed that is, not politically)
  • He's a veggie. He was nominated for the 'World's Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity' in P.E.T.A. June 2008. Today he received a birthday card from P.E.T.A. of a fish, a pig, a chicken and a cow on the famous Abbey Road zebra crossing, holding signs saying 'Happy Birthday Paul', 'Thank you', 'For Loving Us', 'Not Eating Us'.
  • He's the only Beatle to be nominated for an Academy Award in his own right.
  • His divorce from Heather Mills cost potentially up to $60 million.
  • He's also a painter, and has work displayed in the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool.

Just a sample of the awards he's received over the years...
  • 'Richest Rockstar in the World' - Q, August 1998
  • Ranked 3rd in 'Britain's Richest Musical Figures' - Sunday Times, April 2007
  • 'Chosen Man of the Year', GQ, 2006
  • Listed in 'Hollywood's 10 Most Generous Entertainers', Forbes, May 2006
  • 'The Largest Stadium Audience in History' (Rio de Janeiro, April 1990), Guinness Book of Records
  • 'Most Successful Popular-Music Composer and Recording Artist', Guinness Book of Records
Performing at the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Concert 2012
Paul McCartney has been a national treasure of England, and music just wouldn't be the same without him, and his appearances at pretty much every big concert shown on the BBC (Live Aid, Live 8, and more recently Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee Concert). For many he's remembered as a heart-throb and genius from the 60s phenomenon, but the outstanding impression he has made right up until 2012 has excelled his reputation from The Beatles to far beyond.
