July 16th: The Day the Islamic Calendar Began

The Islamic calendar is paralleled with the journey of the Prophet Muhammad on July 16th 622, from Mecca to Medina. Muslims believe that Muhammad was the final prophet sent from God to refine and perfect the Islamic religion, and his journey has real significance of his transformation from mystic to warrior-statesman. His travels from Mecca to Medina also symbolise the launching part of the Islam religion itself, with the calendar being a fundamental element, and the journey kickstarting the long rise of Muhammad's religious vision.

Shortly after Muhammad's arrival in Medina, his following grew and he and his disciples aspired to spread the word. Some of his actions and words were recorded in the Holy Qur'an, with his own sayings and remembrances forming the Sunnah. Islam has continued to grow since the year 622, with now over one billion Muslims worldwide. The happenings of July 16th 622 provided Islam with their calendar, the beginning of their sacred dates and celebrations which are so significant in their religion.
