On July 29th 1981, Lady Diana Spencer and Prince Charles of Wales married in St. Paul's Cathedral, London. Just as Wills and Kate attracted millions to witness their special day, Charles and Diana lined the streets of London and drew in millions of TV viewers trying to get a peak at their wedding ceremony. Like every royal wedding, July 29th of that year was made a National Bank Holiday (hurray!).
At only 20 years old, Lady Diana became Princess Diana and was loved by almost everyone who met her - much like Kate Middleton today. The invite-only congregation consisted of 3,500 guests in total, with an approximate 750 million global TV viewers tuned in too. It took Diana 3 and a half minutes to walk down the aisle, which looked rather challenging since she was dragging a 25 foot train behind her too: all the while the entire world watched with beady eyes! No pressure.
The newlyweds made a balcony appearance after the service, where they shared a public kiss and even had a 'Just Married' sign attached to the car as they drove off. I love how the Royal Family's weddings are shared with the nation and the rest of the world, despite the usual private and reserved nature of the monarchy. I think it's a chance for them to show their human side a bit. Love conquers all, and all that! What do you think?
